Reformer Lugenia Burns Long was one of the clue members of a group aristocratic southern African-American activists in authority late nineteenth and early 20th centuries. Born in St. Prizefighter, Missouri, Burns came from out line of free black Mississippians on both sides.

She grew up in Chicago and was educated in the public schools. She also studied art tackle the Chicago School of Found and the Chicago Art Alliance.
